Lucas Leiva renueva con el Liverpool "a largo plazo"

El internacional de Brasil Lucas Leiva firmó hoy un nuevo contrato con el Liverpool que lo vincula al club "a largo plazo", según informó la entidad de la Premier League en un comunicado sin especificar el año en que expirará ese acuerdo.

El centrocampista, de 24 años, selló su primer contrato con los reds en julio de 2007, fecha hasta la que militó en el Gremio de Brasil.

El nuevo director técnico del Liverpool, Damien Comolli, aseguró en un comunicado poco después de anunciarse la renovación de Leiva que está "encantado" con esa decisión del club, pues se trata de un objetivo personal que quería cumplir desde su nombramiento en noviembre pasado para el puesto que hasta entonces ocupaba el español Eduardo Macía.

"Una de las primeras cosas que hizo al llegar fue mirar los contratos y ver en qué punto estaba Lucas. Sabía que teníamos que hacer algo rápidamente porque no podíamos permitirnos perderlo", explicó el directivo francés.

Lucas Leiva, que disputó 45 partidos como titular la pasada temporada y este año se prevé cumpla entre 45 y 50, "tiene la mentalidad, calidad y actitud adecuadas", en opinión de Comolli.

The Reds have secured the future of the highly-rated 18-year-old, who figured in the first-team squad last season, after he signed the deal today.

Liverpool's Director of Football Damien Comolli said: "We are delighted. He made fantastic progress last season. He was here at Melwood with the first team for a few weeks to a month towards the end of last season and he did really well in training and was involved with the first team.

"He also did really well with the reserves. He's got great potential and a great future ahead of him.

"Andre is another player who is versatile. He can play, is good on the ball, intelligent and physically very strong. He has all the ingredients to be a top defender."

Wisdom was installed as reserve-team captain for the 2010-11 season after helping England to success in last summer's U17s European Championships.

A knee injury sidelined the powerful defender at the start of the campaign, but he returned in the New Year stronger than ever, earning international honours at U19 level.

Such was his progress, Wisdom was named on the first-team bench twice over the course of last season, including on the final day at Aston Villa, as well as being included in the Europa League squad.

"We have shown for a while that if young players are good enough they will be rewarded," added Comolli.

"I told him when he signed it is just a step. It's an achievement in a way, but he should not just sit on this contract and wait to see what happens - he should show that he is hungry and wants to keep progressing.

"We know he is very young and that his position at centre-half is very difficult to break into in the first team because of the responsibilities of the position, but Andre has all the qualities and skills to get there."

Steven Gerrard has today committed his long-term future to Liverpool by signing an extension to his contract with the Reds.

The news completes a great 24 hours for the Anfield skipper, who signed his new deal at Melwood this afternoon after firing the winner in the first-leg of the Carling Cup semi-final at Manchester City last night.


"I'm very happy," said Gerrard today. "It's a very proud day for myself and my family.

"It comes on the back of a fantastic team performance last night when we got the result we were looking for. Hopefully we can finish the job off in two weeks time and take all of our magnificent fans down to Wembley for a day out.

"The contract extension coming the day after has been the icing on the cake so it has been a perfect 24 hours.

"This is the club I love and is the club I have supported since I was a young boy. I am living the dream as the captain of one of the biggest clubs in the world. I love coming to work every day and the experiences I have had since I was eight years of age and first signed for the club, I wouldn't change them for the world. To extend that and to hopefully have some more good times in a red shirt is what I want.

"There will be more highs and lows, there's no doubt about it as that's part and parcel of being a football player at a top club. The important thing is that you react well to the lows and experience more of the highs. I'm confident moving forward that the club is going in the right direction. We've got a fantastic team, we've got the right owners in place and the right team behind our team, so I'm really confident we'll have more good experiences in the future."

Gerrard has also agreed to take up an ambassadorial role at Liverpool Football Club once his illustrious playing career draws to a close.

"It's really flattering for me that the club have offered me the chance to stay when I eventually hang my boots up," he added. "Hopefully that will be in many years to come because I want to play for as long as I can.

"I'll know myself when it's time to hang my boots up and then hopefully I can stay involved with the club and set the right example for youngsters coming through."

Raheem Sterling ha renovado su contrato hasta el 2017.

El joven centrocampista de los Reds ha estampado su firma en un nuevo contrato que le unirá a los de Anfield hasta 2017. Sterling es una de las promesas con las que cuenta Brendan Rodgers, quien en las últimas semanas también renovó al español Suso.

Después de varios días, ambas partes han llegado a un acuerdo en cuanto al salario del jugador, quien irá ganando más conforme pasen las temporadas. Con ello, el Liverpool aleja así a los fantasmas de Manchester United, Manchester City y Arsenal, quienes querían hacerse con el jugador.
