Gortat reportedly headed to Dallas
Restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat has been offered a contract by the Mavericks and had a trip scheduled for Dallas this week, according to sources. Orlando has the right to match the offer, but Gortat's visit is a good sign for the Mavs, who are banking on Magic ownership not dipping into luxury tax territory to sign Dwight Howard's backup.
Terms weren't immediately known, but it was believed Gortat was entertaining offers for the full mid-level exception (starting at around $5.6 million) for up to five years. The deal could be worth more than $30 million.
Gortat's signing would more than likely spell the end to Erick Dampier's checkered run with the Mavs. Expected to be the franchise center Dallas hasn't had since the days of James Donaldson, Dampier's production never matched his paycheck.
The Mavs are shopping Dampier and one possible destination is Detroit, which might be willing to move Rip Hamilton after adding Ben Gordon. Dallas would love to plug Hamilton into the backcourt, and Dampier could be of use in a division that now employs Shaquille O'Neal. Mavs swingman Jerry Stackhouse could also be included in any deal involving Dampier.
Houston and Oklahoma City were among the teams interested in Gortat, 25. The 6-foot-11 center from Poland averaged 3.8 points and 4.5 rebounds last season, but his play during Orlando's postseason run to The Finals made Gortat a premier target in a shallow free agent pool for big men.
Gortat, despite only being in the league two years and with just 69 regular-season games under his belt, is seen as a significant upgrade over Dampier within team circles. Dampier has averaged 7.9 points and 7.4 rebounds over the course of his 13-year career, and is entering the last fully-guaranteed season of his contract.
At this point, however, Gortat remains all potential. He could turn out to be another Mehmet Okur, who blossomed in Utah after backing up Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace in Detroit. Or Gortat could be DeSagana Diop, who the Mavs spent the full mid-level on last summer to bring back to Dallas, only to trade him to Charlotte during the season.
The loss of Gortat would be a blow for Orlando, which made a big splash last week by trading for Vince Carter. The Magic may also watch Hedo Turkoglu walk. Perhaps the top free agent left on the market, Turkoglu is mulling over offers from at least Portland and Toronto.
The Mavs are also trying to bring back Jason Kidd, having reportedly offered the 36-year-old point guard a three-year deal worth as much as $25 million. Kidd has met with New York. The Lakers, Cavaliers and Blazers are also said to be interested.

Re: Básquetbol de la NBA
Turkoglu agrees to terms with Blazers
Hedo Turkoglu reportedly agreed to join the Portland Trail Blazers after helping Orlando reach the NBA finals this season.
ESPN.com on Friday cited unidentified sources and did not disclose terms. Turkoglu's agent, Lon Babby, did not immediately return calls or e-mails. Portland cannot comment on the agreement until Wednesday, when teams may sign free agents.
The 6-foot-10 forward arrived in Portland on Thursday to meet Blazer executives and tour the city.
He opted out of his Orlando contract last week when the team acquired Vince Carter from New Jersey. Turkoglu was due $7.3 million next season in the final year of his $36 million, six-year deal with Orlando. He averaged 16.8 points and 5.3 rebounds last season.
Turkoglu, from Turkey, is a nine-year NBA veteran. He played for Sacramento and San Antonio before signing with Orlando as a free agent in 2004.
This season he often ran Orlando's offense and created matchup problems for the Celtics and Cavaliers in the playoffs. Against the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers in the finals, Turkoglu averaged 18 points.
He was said to be seeking a long-term deal worth at least $10 million annually. Toronto had also expressed interest in him.
The Blazers are looking to bolster a team that won 54 games last season and advanced to the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
Anchored by All-Star guard Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge, the Blazers were the second-youngest team in the NBA.

Celtics offer Rasheed Wallace a contract
The Boston Celtics have offered forward Rasheed Wallace a contract as part of a major push to land the coveted forward.
The Boston Globe report on Friday says the Celtics offered Wallace a deal during a three-hour meeting in Detroit on Thursday.
Celtics stars Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce joined general manager Danny Ainge and managing partner Wyc Grousbeck at the meeting.
Wallace's agent, Bill Strickland, tells the Globe some contractual terms were discussed, but no agreement was reached.
He said Wallace will be meeting with other teams next week. Charlotte, Cleveland, Orlando and San Antonio are said to be possible suitors.
The 35-year-old Wallace averaged 12 points per game last year, and would likely play a complementary role in Boston.

Re: Básquetbol de la NBA
Yao Ming will wait week before surgery decision
Houston Rockets All-Star center Yao Ming will have to wait up to a week before he knows whether he will need surgery on his broken left foot.
The future of 7-foot-6 (226-centimeter) Yao are in question amid reports from the team doctor that the hairline fracture in his foot could keep him out of all of next season, and potentially end his career.
"It hasn't been decided yet," Yao's agent, Eric Zhang, told The Associated Press on Friday. "He is still in the process of group consultations of doctors holding different opinions and different plans. The result of the consultations is due within a week."
Before that there is no way of telling whether surgery will be performed, Zhang said.
"We are still in the information gathering period," he said.
Yao sustained a hairline fracture of the tarsal navicular bone late in a May 8 playoff game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Rockets said last week that the injury has not healed and he was out indefinitely.
Yao played in 77 regular-season games in 2008-09, his most injury-free year since 2004-05, when he played in 80. Before last season, Yao missed chunks of the previous three seasons with leg and foot injuries.
In 2006-07, Yao missed 32 games after breaking his right leg. He suffered a stress fracture in his left foot in 2007-08, underwent surgery and sat out 26 games.
Yao is due to make more than $16 million next season, with a player option for 2010-11 that would pay him more than $17 million.
The uncertainties come at a bad time for Houston, with Rockets forward Ron Artest verbally agreeing on Thursday to join Kobe Bryant and the NBA champion Lakers.
David Bauman, Artest's agent, told The Associated Press the final details are still being worked out. ESPN.com reported Artest had agreed to a three-year deal worth $18 million. Bauman would not confirm those numbers, saying the deal was still being negotiated.
The Rockets envisioned Artest, acquired in a trade with Sacramento last summer, as the final piece to a "Big Three" with Yao and Tracy McGrady, but those two All-Stars are now dealing with long-term injuries.
Houston already knows it will be missing McGrady for the bulk of next season as he recovers from microfracture surgery on his left knee.

Re: Básquetbol de la NBA
Ariza's move to Houston was about respect
The Houston Rockets, fresh off losing Ron Artest to the Los Angeles Lakers, have essentially swapped players by agreeing to terms with Lakers free agent forward Trevor Ariza, whom Artest will be replacing in Los Angeles. The deal will be for five years at the mid-level exception; based on last season's $5.585 million amount for the mid-level, Ariza would get around $32 million.
"We came to an understanding with Houston," said Ariza's agent, David Lee.
Lee said that Ariza actually turned down a bigger offer from Toronto in order to sign with the Rockets, who have been reeling since the news last week that star center Yao Ming's foot injury has not healed since the playoffs and may have gotten worse. The team is not certain if Yao will miss part or all of next season. (A source close to Yao said that within the next three or four days, the team hopes to find consensus among up to five doctors on a course of treatment for Yao, which will almost certainly involve surgery.)
Toronto has been looking to make a score in free agency, having dalliances with Magic unrestricted free agent forward Hedo Turkoglu and Knicks restricted free agent forward David Lee. However, to sign Turkoglu for the five years and $10 million annually he's seeking, Toronto would have to renounce its rights to several of its current free agents, including Shawn Marion and guards Anthony Parker and Carlos Delfino, who played this past season in Russia but whose rights still belong to the Raptors.
"We had a substantially larger offer above the mid-level from Toronto," Lee said. "Trevor decided to go to Houston. I told Mitch (Kupchak, the Lakers' general manager) that it was never about the money; it was about respect."
The 24-year-old Ariza, acquired by Los Angeles last season from Orlando, enjoyed a breakout year this past season with the Lakers, helping Los Angeles to the NBA championship with excellent perimeter defense and clutch three-point shooting. Coach Phil Jackson thought enough of Ariza's abilities that he became a starter down the stretch and in the playoffs, keeping Lamar Odom coming off the bench. But Ariza was looking for a significant raise from the $3.1 million he made this season, and wanted a deal in excess of the mid-level exception.
The Lakers balked, and Ariza began courting other teams. Houston jumped in quickly, with general manager Daryl Morey meeting Ariza in Las Vegas on Thursday.
"Obviously, Daryl made a good impression on him," Lee said.

UTAH JAZZ :D
