Pitch inspection at the DW Stadium
Wigan Athletic's match with Aston Villa is subject to a pitch inspection, called for 8.30am on Saturday.

The club's undersoil heating at the DW Stadium failed on Friday evening to leave the match in real doubt.

Saturday's fixture was all set to be played after the club spent a substantial amount on preparing the area around the stadium with extensive gritting and snow clearing.

The match was given the go-ahead but engineers were unable to revive a faltering undersoil heating system that malfunctioned at around 5.00pm.

Latics manager Roberto Martinez told the club's official website: "I have to congratulate our safety team at the stadium who have worked tirelessly to try and clear the area of ice and snow over the past few days.

"Our ground staff have also spent several nights at the stadium making the sure the pitch remained playable.

"We have to keep our fingers crossed that the frost is not too severe, but a final decision rests with the referee."

Supporters are advised to check the club's website on Saturday morning to keep up-to-date with the latest developments.
